A piece of data that is referred to in another file or application. If you open a spreadsheet program and a word processor in two adjacent windows and drag the spreadsheet data into your document, Windows creates a link between the two files. The spreadsheet file is called an object and is linked into the document in your word processor. (See also OLE.)
